Town Council Meeting – February 2017

The monthly Town Council meeting was held on February 14, 2017. The meeting agenda can be viewed here.

Mayor Donald Buchanan recognized Susan Reeves for her work as the Sesquicentennial Committee Chairperson. 2016 marked the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Tazewell, and was celebrated with several events throughout the year, including the creation of the commemorative Taztownopoly Monopoly game:

Police Chief DeWitt Cooper also recognized the outstanding service of Dennis and Jody Adkins, for their actions in helping apprehend a combative suspect who was struggling with Officer Woodard. The Adkins’ bravely stopped at the scene and assisted eight other officers in helping Officer Woodard.

Residents and businesses located within the Town of Tazewell are encouraged to sign up for CodeRED to be sure they receive timely emergency notifications and other important information and instructions when alerts are received. This is our way of notifying you in an emergency situation. Also you can activate general notifications as a registered subscriber to receive notices of planned road closures, water main repairs, water service interruptions, events, and etc.
When you enroll in the CodeRED system, alerts are issued to you by your geographical location. Alerts can be sent to your cell phone, land line, by text, and even email. You get to choose! With CodeRED, you get the option of also receiving the CodeRED Weather Warning. These alerts are automatically generated when the National Weather Service issues a warning for your location. This early warning could prove to be lifesaving.

It will only take a few minutes to enjoy a service that just may save your life. Please tell all of your family and friends about this invaluable service.

Residents and visitors can now receive enhanced public safety alerts no matter where you are located via the, a free public safety app for both Android and iPhone users. The CodeRED Mobile Alert app delivers community and emergency alerts to individuals targeted within an impacted geographical area. The app enables you to receive timely notifications when you on the road, away from home.
If you are currently a CodeRED subscriber that has already registered your mobile phone to get notifications from the Town of Tazewell, you will continue to receive calls. However, if you download the app, you will also be able to get alerts to your smartphone anywhere in the country, including Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Alaska.

Senator Ben Chafin gave a special presentation to the Town Council, reading the resolution that honors the Town of Tazewell’s 150th anniversary of its incorporation:

Chief Dewitt Cooper introduced the newest police department member Joe Jesse, expressed his thanks to other department members for their quick response in saving lives during a recent collision, and recognized Donny Pruitt’s Public Works team, especially William Asbury, for his dedication to the Town of Tazewell and for going above and beyond his duties to help with events.

Town Council Meeting August 2016

Mayor Donald Buchanan presented Town Manager Todd Day with a recognition letter from Senator Mark Warner to congratulate the Town of Tazewell for being named one of the twentieth safest communities statewide:

Shawn Durham, new CEO of the Four Seasons YMCA, updated the Town Council on the YMCA’s goals and new programs, thanked them for their continued support, and presented the Town Council members with badges as part of the current YMCA support campaign.

Larry and Claudine Blankenship then thanked the Town Council on behalf of their family for Council’s support for the community and for their continued leadership in the positive direction they have steered the Town.

And, Town Manager Todd Day unveiled plans for relocating the recycling bins and dumpsters to the lot beside of the Town of Tazewell EMS on Steeles Lane.
