Town Council Meeting May 2018

The monthly Town Council meeting was held on May 9, 2018. The meeting agenda can be viewed here.

Special Presentations

Suzanne Grindstaff, Principal of North Tazewell Elementary School, thanked the Town Council, the Town of Tazewell Police Department, and the Town of Tazewell on behalf of the school for their ongoing support.

Town Council then recognized Charity Hurst for her dedication to the Town of Tazewell, and thanked her for her service on the Planning Commission.

Angela Leighton, of the Tazewell Tomorrow Foundation, presented Town Council information on their organization, which is geared toward creating programs for young adults and children in the community, along with economic development initiatives to promote Tazewell.

Sean Hagy, representing the Town of Tazewell, gave a presentation about the new Community Notification System. This system is designed to keep the community up-to-date with alerts via text.

Town Council also recognized Council Member David Fox for over thirty years of service to the Town of Tazewell, and declared May 31, 2018 as David Harman Fox day.

Town Council Meeting April 2018

Special Presentations

The Town of Tazewell recognized the wrestling state competition winners with coaches Deacon Young and Joey Stiltner. Congratulations to Jesse McGraw for first place, and recognition as Tazewell’s only first place ever in this competition. And, congratulations to Reid Stiltner for second place, Hunter O’Quinn for qualifying to compete, and Derrick Young for third place.


 

Several donation requests were discussed, along with updates and votes regarding the Oktobrewfest, the new hotel, the Appalachian Trail, and Back of the Dragon.

Town Council Meeting March 2018

Special Presentations

Shawn Durham, CEO of the Four Seasons YMCA, updated the Town Council on the variety of programs and visitors the YMCA offers.

Nikki Hicks, Business Marketing Coordinator for Heart of Appalachia, presented a $2,500 budget request.

Claudine Blankenship, on behalf of the Tazewell Area Chamber of Commerce, submitted a request to use Main Street for the Oktobrewfest to be held on October 6, 2018.

Mayor Buchanan read a proclamation declaring the week of April 1-7 as Local Government Education Week.

Sharon Thomas updated Town Council on plans for the theater property – exciting news about partnering with Barter Theater!

Town Council Meeting February 2018

Special Presentations

The Town of Tazewell introduced the last of its new administrative employees hired: Amber Hale, Sarah Martin, and Sonya Hamilton.

In honor of Black History Month, Jeanette Wilson read the poem “Tazewell Town” from “The Voice from the Virginia Hills” written by her grandfather, Rev. George M. Dickerson. George was a talented scholar, poet, and minister, who wrote this touching poem that gives a glimpse into life in Tazewell in times past. He was also father to well known poet and author, George M. Dickerson, Jr., whose writings include “I’m Not Scared” and “Ask Gladys”.

 The groundbreaking for the Tazewell Train Station was announced and the final date is set for March 23, 2018 at 2:00 pm.

Town Council Meeting November 2017

The monthly Town Council meeting was held on November 14, 2017. The meeting agenda can be viewed here.

Special Presentations

Andy Cecil gave a special presentation regarding the entrance to the Little League field.

 

Pam Meade updated Town Council about the progress of implementing a county-wide Chamber of Commerce.

And, Michael Hoops presented a donation request for modifications to be performed at the Tazewell Middle School gymnasium.

Town Council Meeting September 2017

The monthly Town Council meeting was held on September 12, 2017. The meeting agenda can be viewed here.

Special Presentations

Council member Dr. Chris Brown read the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month proclamation for the Town of Tazewell. The proclamation was presented to Jill Rasnick, representing the TJ Rasnick Foundation, along with Amy and Zac Carter. Zac is currently fighting osteosarcoma, after having battled Burkitt’s Lymphoma when he was six years old.

You can join Zac and the Tazewell community for a candlelight service on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 7:00 pm on the Tazewell High School lawn.

 

The Tazewell County Historical Society presented the Town of Tazewell with a commemorative photo from their Great American Eclipse event that was held on Main Street on August 21, 2017. They recreated a photo taken during the May 28, 1900 eclipse. Copies of the photo presented to the Town of Tazewell are available on their website at http://www.tazewellhistory.org

Town Council Meeting August 2017

Special Presentations

Mayor Donald Buchanan recognized the Tazewell Farm Bureau, honoring them for being in business for 100 years and one of Tazewell’s oldest businesses.

On behalf of the Town of Tazewell, he presented Dorothy Wall with a key to Tazewell.

Tazewell Today intern, Nathan McClung, did a special presentation to update Town Council on the past and present grant requests, along with becoming an honorary citizen of Tazewell. 

Tazewell Today is a local initiative to revitalize the Main Street community. Their mission to develop a warm welcoming center that represents the heart of Tazewell and attracts residents and tourists alike through shopping, dining, working, and playing opportunities. Town Council Meeting July 2017

The monthly Town Council meeting was held on July 11, 2017. The meeting agenda can be viewed here.

Special Recognition

Mayor Buchanan congratulated the Tazewell Little League teams that have gone and are going to state level of competition.

Special Presentation Requests

Mike Tanck with Charter Communications came before Town Council to request the amended franchise agreement be approved for renewal. A public hearing was set for the August 8, 2017 Town Council meeting at 6:45 pm.

Daphne Murray and Clint Neal, from the Farm to Table committee, came before Town Council to request a $1,000 donation for their September 9 event. The requested money will be used for musical entertainment for the evening, and was approved by Town Council
